WELCOME
On behalf of the LGBTQ Programming Office and the Queer Mentoring Program, we would like to welcome you to the LGBTQ Resources site. To the left, you will find information on upcoming LGBTQ-related events, as well as hyperlinks that will direct you to a variety of on-campus and off-campus resources. Two important and ongoing resources provided by our offices include:
LGBTQ Mentoring Program
The LGBTQ Mentoring Program pairs interested LGBTQ undergraduates with an LGBTQ faculty or staff mentor, whose role it is to be a sympathetic and supportive queer adult in a student's life. Mentors also act as sounding board as students navigate their way through a (mostly) straight world and can help students address issues such as whether to come out to friends and family, or on a resume or for graduate or professional school applications. Our hope is that being able to interact with an LGBTQ faculty or staff member will give students a sense of a larger community. Mentors meet with the students they are mentoring quarterly for lunch, dinner, or coffee. In addition, the Mentoring Program sponsors a quarterly get-together (such as a dinner) and various outings to sports and cultural events for all mentors and mentees participating in the program.
Open Source Discussion Groups
OpenSource Discussion Groups represent our continued effort to bring students together from all the schools, to create a greater sense of community, and to support safe spaces on campus. OpenSource sponsors a set of low-key, identity-based, social discussion groups for gay men, lesbians, bi folk, trans individuals, and queer people of color. These groups meet weekly and provide a confidential space for students to get to know each other and discuss topics of interest to them: social, political, academic, or otherwise. The meetings are open to all--graduate, professional, and undergraduate students and allies/friends of LGBTQ individuals are especially welcome to attend.
Sincerely,
Kathy Forde
